Problem:

During Migration the files are not copied to the redirected VHD drive. Removable Storage Issue

Note also any removable drive will not be written to like drive "B" for UIA

Symptoms:

The error shows up when you try to copy files int the VHD path.

Most common VHD path is %userprofile%\Profile-VHD

Manually copying the files to that location returns the warning shown below.

Possible Resolution(s):

The VHD is considered a Removable Storage (just like a USB drive)

It is possible that one of the GPO is prohibiting removable devices (such as USB, or VHD).

It can be either a local GPO or a GPO applied by one of the Domain Controllers.

NOTE: The below example shows how to disable the "All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access" on the Local Computer Policy

Scenario 1)

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Editor. To do so, click Start, and then in the Start Search box, type mmc gpedit.msc.

  2. In the navigation pane, open Local Computer Policy. Then do one of the following:

    • If you want the policy to affect all users on the computer, open Computer Configuration in the navigation pane.

    • If you want the policy to affect only the currently logged on user, open User Configuration in the navigation pane.

  3. Continue by opening the following folders: Administrative Templates, System, and Removable Storage Access.

  4. In the details pane, double-click All Removable Storage classes: Deny all access.

  5. Click Disabled.

  6. Click OK to save your changes.

Scenario 2)
  1. Open CMD as Administrator.
  2. Run: "gpresult /h gpo.html" than "gpo.html" (This should open gpo.html in IE)
  3. Search for: USBSTOR.INF and/or USBSTOR.SYS
  4. IF those entries are found it will result in failure to write to VHD location do to GPO removable drive restriction.
Example:

The workaround is to use "Mapped Drive" for folder redirection (versus "%userprofile%\Profile-VHD") of Application Data and Local Application Data.
