Problem:

How do I upgrade from version 5.5 through 5.7 to 6.0 Update 4?

Resolution:

Note: This document shows version numbers that correspond to Update 2. Always check the Version Matrix to make sure you are updating to the latest version.

The upgrade takes place in two or three parts: upgrading the console and then upgrading the client tools. If FlexApp is installed, the FlexApp Packaging Console will also need to be upgraded. The instructions below show how to update the console and client tools automatically. Manual steps are also included for both of these. The FlexApp Packaging Console is a simple manual installation.

Note: See the ProfileUnity Installation and Configuration Guide (PDF) for more information on requirements, prerequisites, and detailed instructions.

Note: Before upgrade, it is recommended to take a snapshot of the console VM and back up the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) prior to the upgrade so that you can revert if necessary.

Upgrading the ProfileUnity Console

Automated Console Upgrade:

1. Log into the ProfileUnity Administration Console.

2. Note the star in the upper-right-hand corner. Click About.

5. The update will download and install. Note the last step, 'Restarting services.' Shortly after this appears, you will be unable to access the console for a minute or two. You may see a prompt saying that your browser that cannot access the page. This is normal.

6. Wait a few minutes for the console to come back up and refresh your browser. When the console comes back up, log back in and verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

Manual Console Upgrade:

1. Download the latest version of ProfileUnity with FlexApp from the Liquidware Labs download page.

2. Do not remove the previous installation. Install the latest version on top of the existing installation.

3. Recommended: Copy the profileunity.lic file from the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) to the C:\Program Files\ProfileUnity directory. This is an optional step, but it is useful to make sure that the console license count matches that of the clients.

4. Log in to the console and verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

Verifying The Console Upgrade:

In the web console, hover over your profile in the upper-right-hand corner and click About. Note the green text at the bottom saying that you are running the latest version. The version number at the top can be compared with the Version Matrix here.

4. The next steps to take are determined by whether ProfileUnity is installed on the base image.

a. If ProfileUnity is not installed on the base image (default configuration), refresh the catalog (VMware View) or set the catalog to Maintenance Mode and reboot all machines (XenDesktop), then verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

b. If ProfileUnity is installed on the base image, boot the base image and run the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe application or the startup.vbs script (both do the same thing and are located in \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity\ or the share where you keep the client files) to upgrade the client tools. Recompose the catalog (VMware View) or update the catalog image (XenDesktop), then verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

Manual Client Tools Upgrade:

1. Hover over your profile in the upper-right-hand corner and click Administration.

4. Browse to your \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files). Recommended: Back up all of the files in that directory to a separate location.

5. Paste the new files into the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) and accept any prompts to overwrite files.

6. The next steps to take are determined by whether ProfileUnity is installed on the base image.

a. If ProfileUnity is not installed on the base image (default configuration):

i. Refresh the catalog (VMware View) or set the catalog to Maintenance Mode and reboot all machines, then take them out of maintenance mode (XenDesktop).

ii. Verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

b. If ProfileUnity is installed on the base image:

i. Boot the base image and run the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe application or the startup.vbs script to upgrade the client tools. (Both files do the same thing and are included in the client tools folder you extracted in step #3 above or in the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity\ folder [or the share where you keep the client files] after copying them in step #5 above.)

ii. Recompose the catalog (VMware View) or update the catalog image (XenDesktop), then verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

Verifying the Client Tools Upgrade:

1. Right-click on any executable in the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) and click Properties.
