How To Upgrade ProfileUnity 6 To 6.0 Update 4

Product: ProfileUnity

Product Version: 6.0+

Updated: June 24, 2015

Problem:

How do I upgrade from version 6.0 or 6.0 Update 1 to 6.0 Update 4?

Resolution:

For version 6.0 Update 4, the method of upgrading the console is different from that of previous versions such as 5.5/5.7 to 6.0. There is no online upgrade procedure for 6.0 to 6.0 patch 4.

Note: The console version between 6.0 Update 2 and 6.0 Update 4 did not change. Therefore you will update the console to 6.0 Update 2 and the client to 6.0 Update 4.

If your console software is already on 6.0 Update 2, proceed directly to the 'Client Tools Upgrade Instructions' section.

If you are on 6.0 Update 1, you can follow the online update procedure, unless ProfileUnity is installed on 2012 or 2012 R2.

It is important to follow the instructions below to ensure a successful upgrade.  Also please review component chart at end of KB article to best understand what version you are on.

The upgrade takes place in three parts:

1. Update the console.

2. Update the agents.

3. Once the agent is in place and the update has been verified, re-download and redeploy the .INI file.

Additional Notes

Note: See the ProfileUnity Installation and Configuration Guide (PDF) for more information on requirements, prerequisites, and detailed instructions.

Note: Before upgrade, back up the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder prior to the upgrade so that you can revert if necessary.

Note: There is no need to update the FlexApp Packaging Console, as that component has not changed.

Automatic Console Upgrade Instructions for 6.01 to 6.02 (Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 Only)

Note: This procedure is only for Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 installations and is also not applicable for upgrades from 6.0 to 6.01 or 6.02. These installations require a manual upgrade procedure (see below).

Note: The web service will restart on upgrade, therefore you may want to apply this upgrade during a change control window. You may be unable to access the console for several minutes after the upgrade takes place. This is normal.

  1. Note the star in the upper-right-hand corner. Click the dropdown and choose About. Note the following screen:

  2. Click Update. The following screen will appear:

  3. Click Yes to proceed. The update will download and begin installation.

  4. After the 'Restarting services. Please wait.' prompt, the web console will refresh and show that the web page is unavailable. This is normal.

  5. Wait several minutes for the console to come back up, then refresh the page. The normal login prompt should appear. If it does not appear, wait several more minutes and try again.
  6. When the login prompt appears, log in and the About screen should appear. For 6.0 Update 2, the version shows as 6.0.5409 and you should see 'You are running the latest version of ProfileUnity.NET' at the bottom:

  7. The installation is complete. Follow the 'Client Tools Upgrade' instructions below to upgrade the client tools.

Manual Console Upgrade Instructions for 6.0 to 6.02 or from 6.01 to 6.02 on WS2012 / 2012 R2

Note: This procedure is only necessary for the above conditions. Otherwise you can follow the Automatic instructions above.

1. Download the latest patch here. (This is a dynamic link that will always give the latest version of ProfileUnity.)

2. Run the new MSI to install it directly on top of the old. Do not remove the old version first. Note that after upgrading the software, it may take a few minutes for the console to become available again.

3. Verify the upgrade in the ProfileUnity console using the instructions below.

Verifying The Console Upgrade:

In the web console, hover over your profile in the upper-right-hand corner and click About. Note the green text at the bottom saying that you are running the latest version. The version number at the top can be compared with the Version Matrix here.

Client Tools Upgrade Instructions:

1. Download the 6.0 Update 4 client tools from the bottom of the Version Matrix page.

3. Download the .zip file locally and extract it. Select all the files, then right-click, Copy.

4. Browse to your \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files).

5. Recommended: Back up all of the files in that directory to a separate location.

6. Paste the new files into the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) and accept any prompts to overwrite files.

7. The next steps to take are determined by whether ProfileUnity is installed on the base image.

a. If ProfileUnity is not installed on the base image (default configuration):

i. Refresh the catalog (VMware View) or set the catalog to Maintenance Mode and reboot all machines, then take them out of maintenance mode (XenDesktop).

ii. Verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

b. If ProfileUnity is installed on the base image:

i. Boot the base image and run the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe application or the startup.vbs script to upgrade the client tools. (Both files do the same thing and are included in the client tools folder you extracted in step #3 above or in the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity\ folder [or the share where you keep the client files] after copying them in step #5 above.)

ii. Recompose the catalog (VMware View) or update the catalog image (XenDesktop), then verify the upgrade using the instructions below.

Verifying the Client Tools Upgrade:

1. Right-click on any executable in the \\domain\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity folder (or the share where you keep the client files) and click Properties.

2. Click the Details tab and compare the file version with the Version Matrix here.

Re-downloading the .INI File

After verifying that the client has updated, re-download the .INI file to the NETLOGON\ProfileUnity share and refresh your catalog or reboot all machines to make sure they pull down the new .INI file.
