Problem:

Enabling portability debug mode logging for ProfileUnity 5.7 -6.0

Note: For 6.5 logging, see this document.

Symptoms:

This article assumes you are using the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe for the Computer Startup GPO instead of startup.vbs.

Possible Resolution(s):

If ProfileUnity is installed in the base image

1. Power on the base image (golden image, parent VM) and and navigate to C:\Program Files\ProfileUnity\Client.Net

2. Edit the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.exe.config file, changing 'Fatal' to 'Debug' and changing the log path to a valid network share path.

3. Save the file. Make sure the encoding saves as ANSI (some text editors change the encoding to UTF-8 by default). If unsure of the encoding, click 'Save As...' and make sure the encoding at the bottom of that window is set to ANSI.

4. Shutdown the base image, take a snapshot and recompose.

If ProfileUnity is installed via Startup GPO script

1. Navigate to the ProfileUnity share (typically \\domaincontroller\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity)

2. Make a copy of the client.net.zip file for safekeeping.

3. Extract the client.net.zip archive.

4. Edit the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.exe.config file, changing 'Fatal' to 'Debug' and changing the log path to a valid network share path.

5. Save the file. Make sure the encoding saves as ANSI (some text editors change the encoding to UTF-8 by default). If unsure of the encoding, click 'Save As...' and make sure the encoding at the bottom of that window is set to ANSI.

6. Open the client.net.zip archive and drop this new version into the archive.

7. In the ProfileUnity share (typically \\domaincontroller\NETLOGON\ProfileUnity), edit the LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe.config file

8. Modify the following line:

...incrementing the existing value slightly, such as from 6.0.5394 to 6.0.5494.

9.  Once complete you need to do the following so the new settings will apply.

Persistent machines: Reboot the machine so the startup computer GPO executes.

Non-Persistent machines: Open View Composer or equivalent for your VDI environment), select the desktop pool, and refresh all machines.
