Problem:

ProfileUnity executes a VHD.exe process for each user on XenApp and RDS server

Symptoms:

Multiple instances of VHD.exe show up in Task Manager, one for each user.  The system becomes slower and slower as more users log on to the system.

Possible Resolution(s)

1st - This will prevent DIA (vhd) from running on server)

On the live servers affected by this issue, do the following as administrator:

  1. Run command "taskkill /f /IM vhd.exe" to terminate all running instance of VHD.exe
  2. Rename VHD.exe in C:\Program Files\ProfileUnity\FlexApp directory to VHD_backup.exe so that it will run again

To address this on the base image, install the client tools manually (LwL.ProfileUnity.Client.Startup.exe) first, then rename VHD.exe in C:\Program Files\ProfileUnity\FlexApp directory to VHD_backup.exe.  Recompose/reprovision with this new image.

2nd - This will still allow DIA-vhd to run for users at login

We need to allow the system level running of vhd.exe for DIA to happen but stop this from running in user context.  To accomplish this you can create an application launcher rule with the following parameters to kill vhd.exe at the user level.

Choose appropriate filter required to limit exposure.
